du Pegau
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 2013
About this Item
Domaine du Pegau is one of the most revered traditional estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, run by Laurence Féraud and her late father Paul, making powerful, ageworthy, Grenache-based reds. Cuvée Réservée is its classic bottling. 2013 was a difficult, Grenache-affected vintage, yet Pegau made a notably deep example. Josh Raynolds from Vinous gave it a rating of 93, James Molesworth from Wine Spectator gave it 91, Jeb Dunnuck from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave it 90, and Jancis Robinson gave it 16.5 out of 20.

“Deep ruby. Potent aromas of ripe dark berries, licorice pastille, woodsmoke, game and garrigue, plus a peppery nuance that adds spiciness and lift. Round and fleshy on the palate, offering intense blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that become livelier and sweeter with air. The very long, energetic, sharply focused finish features fine-grained tannins and subtle, lingering notes of dark berries and smoked meat.” - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100 (Feb 2016)
“Steeped plum and blackberry paste flavors form the core, lined with smoldering charcoal and tobacco leaf notes. Reveals a light tarry edge on the finish, which pulls together nicely. A solid effort in this Grenache-hampered vintage.” - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (May 2016)
“There’s an incredible track record of wines from this estate, even from difficult vintages, aging beautifully. A beautiful wine, especially in the vintage, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée (80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvèdre and the rest other permitted grapes) has more depth and richness than most, as well as classic Pégaü notes of ripe black cherries, peppery herbs, tobacco leaf and hints of bloody meat.....” - Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Oct 2016)
“Healthy blackish crimson. Big, brutal, savoury nose. Lots of fizz on the palate. But, surprisingly, not that much tannin! Juicy but as though it were dominated by slightly overblown Mourvèdre. Dramatic but it needs to build up a bit more fruit in the middle.” - Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Nov 2014)
