Joh. Jos. Prüm

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese 2018

Germany
About the Session

This is the largest list of German wines Strauss & Co has ever offered! Once regarded as the greatest wines in the world, German and specifically Mosel Riesling are long aging and investment worthy. Running deep through the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer and across celebrated vintages including the ripe 2009, the warm 2018 and the racy, acclaimed 2019.
‘Trocken’ is the dry Riesling style, while ‘Kabinett’ is off-dry and ‘Spatlese’ and ‘Auslese’ are much sweeter. Another pointer, Is that the higher the alcohol, the more likely the wine is to be drier in style.

About this Item

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese 2018
2 (1 x 2) 750ml

No name on the Mosel carries more mystique than Joh. Jos. Prüm, whose Wehlen estate makes Rieslings so tightly coiled in youth that they can take decades to reveal their genius, and age for half a century or more. The Wehlener Sonnenuhr, marked by its famous hillside sundial, is one of the Mosel's greatest blue-slate vineyards. 2018 was a warm, ripe German vintage. Stephan Reinhardt from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 95, Richard Hemming MW gave it 16.5 out of 20, and Wine Spectator reviewed it.

Critics Ratings

"The 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is coolish, precise and flinty on the elegant and complex yet always bright and seductive nose that offers lush and precise white stone fruit aromas. Intense and refined on the palate, this is a dense, highly elegant, tightly structured and sustainable Spätlese with a long and stimulatingly salty finish. A fabulous and serious WSU Spätlese. Tasted at the domain in September 2020." - Stephan Reinhardt, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Oct 2020)

"Candied peel, lime juice, orange juice. Plenty of sweetness and volume and the acid here doesn't seem so piercing. Delicious, but their Graacher Himmelreich is my preferred of their 2018 Spätlesen." - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Dec 2022)

"Well-structured and harmonious, with a silky mouthfeel, this is very charming, yet powerful and expressive, revealing saffron and jasmine aromas. The palate features tropical fruit flavors of guava and passion fruit, followed by sweet Asian spice notes. Star anise and apricot marmalade hints extend on the finish." - Wine Spectator (Jun 2020)
