Italy
About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barolo 2015
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Founded in 1976 in Monforte d'Alba, Domenico Clerico became one of Barolo's most celebrated modernist producers and a central figure of the Barolo Boys movement; the estate is now managed by his wife Giuliana following Domenico's passing in 2017. The Barolo is a blend of Nebbiolo from the estate's Monforte d'Alba vineyards, aged in French oak barriques. The 2015 Barolo vintage is rated among the finest in recent memory, a warm and generous year producing wines of opulent fruit and early approachability. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17 out of 20.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Lustrous mid ruby. Subdued but with a clear underlying concentration of fruit. Supple and succulent and well balanced. Attractive tannic bite on the long and generous finish, which ends a little racy.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jun 2019)

“New oak adds a touch of vanilla and another layer of tannins to this intense red, making it a bit more severe in its youth. Plum, cherry, tar, tobacco and floral top notes mingle with tree bark and iron accents as this evolves through the dense, dusty finish.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Apr 2020)
