About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè 2009
1 (1 x 1( 750ml
Elio and Marina Grasso established their eponymous estate in 1978 in the natural amphitheatre of Monforte d’Alba, and from the outset chose to vinify and bottle each of their hillside parcels separately. The estate, now guided by their son Gianluca, straddles tradition and modernity and is celebrated for Barolo of aromatic class and great ageing potential. Ginestra Casa Matè is the more powerful and structured of the two principal crus, grown on deeper clay and sandstone and aged in large Slavonian oak botti. The 2009 came from a warm vintage, giving a dark, broad and richly textured expression.

Critics Ratings

“Pale ruby. Rich, pastry-cream nose. Then tightens up on the palate to autumnal notes. Dry finish but quite dramatic.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Sep 2014)

“A dense red, bordering on muscular, with cherry notes and a rich texture offsetting the tannins. This is balanced, featuring a long finish of fruit and spice. Just needs time.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Apr 2014)

“Grasso’s 2009 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Matè is a bit richer, deeper and darker than the Gavarini. That is the essence of 2009. Dark cherries, plums, menthol and spices flesh out on the broad, richly textured finish.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100 (May 2013)
