About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Brunello di Montalcino 2007
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
Ornella Tondini and Lionel Cousin moved from Paris to Montalcino in the 1990s, purchasing a long-abandoned estate near Camigliano in the south-west of the appellation in 1994 and planting their first Sangiovese vines from 1997; the Burgundian-trained Lionel, who died in 2021, produced a distinctive style of Brunello aged in barrique rather than traditional botti, inspired by his time with Burgundy's Henri Jayer. The 2007 Brunello vintage was warm and opulent, producing wines of considerable concentration and power. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 16.5 out of 20.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“From magnum. Mid to deep developing ruby with narrow bricky rim. Quite intense and peppery and at the same time not fully open. Complex, peppery dark fruit with a hint of walnut. Quite exotic and deviating a little from the fragrant Cupano style. Still a little compact and a bit rich on the palate, but with plenty of supple acidity. Bags and bags of gravelly tannins, but the fruit keeps up. Much more layered than 2008!” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Apr 2023)
