About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barbaresco 2015
5 (1 x 5) 750ml
La Ca' Nova was established in the early 1970s by Pietro Rocca, a fourth-generation grape grower in the village of Barbaresco, whose family had previously sold their fruit to Angelo Gaja before beginning to bottle their own wine; today the estate is run by Marco Rocca and his brothers across 14 organic hectares. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in large, neutral Austrian oak casks, the wines are made in a resolutely traditional style that allows the Nebbiolo and the Barbaresco terroir to speak for themselves. The standard Barbaresco draws from four of the appellation's most celebrated crus: Montefico, Montestefano, Ovello and Cole. The 2015 was a warm and generous vintage producing wines of good concentration and early approachability. Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 91.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“La Ca' Nova's 2015 Barbaresco is wonderfully open-knit and inviting. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint, spice and white pepper make a strong opening statement. The 2015 is a very pretty, easygoing wine. In other words, exactly what an entry-level Barbaresco should be. The ripeness of the year comes through in the wine's racy personality and slightly candied profile. There is so much to like, including the wine's undeniable appeal. The straight Barbaresco is a blend of fruit from Montefico, Montestefano, Ovello and Cole.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91/100 (Aug 2018)
