About this Item

Saint-Émilion 2008
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
The 2008 Saint-Émilion vintage produced wines of genuine structure and aromatic definition, and Château Troplong Mondot’s 2008 is considered a wine of the vintage candidate for the appellation, earning 96/100 from Robert Parker and 93/100 from Neal Martin. Parker praised its copious blue and black fruits, full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin and fabulous texture and finish, noting it was already drinking beautifully while having decades ahead. Neal Martin found it a little beauty with vibrant red fruit, cassis and violets soaring from the glass, and commended its fine earthy Cabernet Franc and good structural backbone for a decade in the cellar. Parker’s note was addressed directly to Christine Valette, the proprietor who had guided the estate from 1980 and under whose transformative stewardship Troplong Mondot earned its Premier Grand Cru Classé B classification in 2006. The estate’s origins date to the seventeenth century on the highest point in the entire Saint-Émilion appellation. The 2008 blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with yields of 41 hectolitres per hectare achieving 14.5% natural alcohol.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Copious quantities of blue and black fruits, a full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin and a fabulous texture as well as finish. Already drinking beautifully, it will be even better in 2 to 5 years and should last for 20 years. A great effort for the vintage, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving proprietor, Christine Valette. Bravo!” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (May 2011)

“A lovely floral bouquet with vibrant red fruit, cassis and violets that soar from the glass. Deftly integrated oak with Asian spices coming through. The palate is full-bodied and tannic, very grippy with spice, black olive and blackberry. There is some fine, earthy Cabernet Franc here and good structure on the finish. Deserves a decade in the cellar.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (May 2012)
