About this Item
A rose quartz figure, Hotei (god of wealth), 19th or 20th century
Notes
A small figure of Hotei, the Chinese God of Wealth, finely carved from translucent rose quartz. The carving follows the same lapidary techniques used in jade sculpture, with smoothly polished planes and softly modelled features that make full use of the natural luminosity of the stone. The deity is shown seated, his rounded form and serene expression typical of prosperity figures intended to attract good fortune and abundance. Rose quartz, though less common than jade, was favoured for devotional carvings for its associations with harmony and auspicious energy.
