height: 16cm excluding base, 19cm including base; width: 14cm; depth: 10cm
Notes
A polychrome glazed ceramic figure of a seated sage with elongated cranium, wearing a blue robe and holding an open scroll, seated before a cylindrical aperture, likely designed as a brush holder. The figure is modelled in the manner of Fukurokuju, the deity of wisdom and longevity. Such objects were produced as scholar’s desk ornaments in the Edo period, showing expressive modelling and lively glaze work. The fitted hardwood stand suggests use within a scholar’s desk setting.
