Notes
An early Chinese pottery tomb figure of a standing mourner, T’ang dynasty, wearing a belted tunic and jack-boots, with hands held before the body on a wooden base. Covered in a light straw-coloured glaze, with softly modelled facial features and stylised drapery. Funerary figures of this type were placed in tombs to serve and protect the deceased. The surface shows characteristic crackle and gentle toning associated with early earthenware glazes.
