About this Item

Cape Rococo stinkwood cabinet-on-stand, 18th century
the moulded shaped cornice centred by a carved foliate key-block, above a pair of conforming glazed doors and side panels enclosing two shelves with a single frieze drawer below, the stand with ring-turned tapering octagonal legs joined by a wavy cross-stretcher centred by an oval yellowwood detail, raised on bun feet, brass fittings
height: 228cm; width: 145cm; depth: 60cm

Notes

Most glass cabinets at the Cape date from the early Baroque period. These cupboards may have initially been used to store goods, but over time, as porcelain collections from the East became more prolific in households, there became a need for storage and display of china.
