Zanzibar brass-mounted teak chest, 19th century
the rectangular moulded hinged top applied with brass studs and pierced plaques, the front similarly decorated, set with three drawers, the sides with brass carrying handles, raised on bun feet

Notes
Zanzibar chests were produced primarily in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and served as dowry chests, merchant strongboxes or household storage. They were constructed from dense tropical hardwoods and decorated with brass bosses, studs and mounts which reinforced vulnerable surfaces but also served as a sign of wealth and status.
