Zanzibar brass-mounted teak chest, 19th century
Notes
Zanzibar chests were produced primarily in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and served as dowry chests, merchant strongboxes or household storage. They were constructed from dense tropical hardwoods and decorated with brass bosses, studs and mounts which reinforced vulnerable surfaces but also served as a sign of wealth and status.
