About this Item
Harlequin set of seven Cape stinkwood Neo-classical side chairs, early 19th century
each with a shaped and curved top rail headed by a central cresting above a pair of conforming back rails, caned seat, raised on square-section tapering legs joined by an H-shaped stretcher
(7)
height: 86cm; width: 50cm; depth: 43cm
Provenance
Private Collection.
Notes
Simplified Neo-classical chairs without back slats are a colonial development that does not really have a prototype in England or Europe. Parallel back rails are characteristic of Regency seating, but the undercarriage of these chairs with slender tapering legs and H-shaped stretchers remains Neo-classical in form.
