Notes
These Cape bobbin-rail chairs were made in the Cape Regency style period (1820- 1900). The group of British settlers that arrived in the Eastern Cape in 1820, brought with them a taste and technical expertise that would directly influence the development of this style.
The Cape Regency chair has horizontal straight back rails and tapering ring-turned legs with no stretchers.
This style developed into the predominant style for seat furniture in South Africa during the nineteenth and into the twentieth century, and many survive today.
