Cape yellowwood, stinkwood and teak fall-front bureau, 18th century
the rectangular top above a serpentine fall-front enclosing an interior fitted with two drawers and open compartments, above two long graduated linen-fold drawers, raised on cabriolet legs with hoof feet, fitted with brass drop handles and escutcheons
height: 87cm; width: 93cm; depth: 58cm
Notes
The bureau developed in the late 17th century when literacy, commerce and personal correspondence expanded rapidly. Fitted interiors became increasingly elaborate, including features such as small drawers, pigeonholes, secret compartments and sliding well covers.
