Set of four Vogel 'Nguni' ash wood and cord dining chairs, South Africa, 2006
each with a curved horseshoe-shaped backrest above a woven cord seat, raised on tapering cylindrical legs
(4)
height: 78cm; width: 53cm; depth: 54cm
Notes
These chairs reflect John Vogel's signature fusion of Scandinavian modernist restraint with African craft traditions.
The Nguni Chair gets its name from the indigenous Nguni Cattle of Southern Africa. The curved, linear rail of the backrest is designed to mimic the distinct sweeping shape of a Nguni cow's horn. The woven seat pays homage to the riempie (a traditional leather or cord weaving technique) commonly found in traditional South African furniture.
