French Rococo gilt-metal inkstand, late 19th century
in the form of swirling acanthus leaves, fitted with a pair of inkwells, each with a hinged acanthus-leaf cover, applied with oak branches and acorns, surmounted by a nymph, stamped 'BD 462'. The associated letter opener with a foliate handle

Notes
By the mid-19th century, literacy and correspondence were central to French bourgeois life. Inkstands were status symbols as well as decorative focal points of the secretaire, bureau plat or cartonnier.
