About this Item
A pair of Chinese Export 'pseudo tobacco' pattern soup plates, Qianlong period, 1736-1795
each profusely enamelled with sprays of flowerheads and foliage enclosed by an iron-red and gilt border, sienna-glazed, octagonal-shaped rim
(2)
height: 4cm; diameter: 22cm
Notes
Despite the historical Western trade name, the vibrant foliage depicts tropical Southeast Asian flora, including passionflower and hibiscus, rather than actual tobacco plants. The design features two interlocking rings near the floral stems, a traditional Chinese symbol representing eternal harmony and marital fidelity. This vibrant famille rose palette was highly prized in the 18th century, often imported by aristocratic families across Portugal, Brazil, and Great Britain.
