Notes
Dumb waiters, also called 'whatnots' or étagères (from the French word 'to arrange on shelves') were popular in the Victorian era for displaying ornaments, photographs and curios. This era saw the rise in global collecting as objects were brought back from the colonies and displaying collections was a status symbol equated with moral and intellectual cultivation.
