About this Item

the shaped and moulded back centred with a panel flanked by carved foliate motifs, with padded back and outscrolled arms, upholstered seat, raised on baluster ring-turned legs

Notes
During the Regency period in England, which spanned roughly from 1811 to 1820, sofas became more prominent in English interiors as spaces for informal conversation replaced formal seating.
The curved back, rolled arms and carved detailing in this example reflect the Regency fascination with archaeology and classical antiquity following the discoveries of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
