About this Item
Notes
The discovery of the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum led to the revival of simplicity and classical form throughout Europe. This new style which replaced the frivolity and exuberance of the Rococo style with clean straight lines, was introduced to the Cape by French troops in the late 18th century.
This tapered-leg country table is plain but elegant and is a good example of Cape country Neo-classicism. It was during this period that the the use of inlay was introduced by the country craftsman.
