About this Item
Notes
Armchairs were abundant in the 1800s, and their styles closely followed the style of dining chairs as most table sets had matching carvers.
Regency taste dominated the design of Cape furniture in the nineteenth century as a result of the second British occupation in 1806 and the arrival of the 1820 British settlers. The central stylised anthemion on this armchair is an example of the re-interpretation and influence of British styles in the colony.
