About this Item
Macán is the flagship wine of Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, a joint venture established in 2004 by the Álvarez family of Vega Sicilia and the Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild; after five years of vineyard acquisition and evaluation, 2009 was the first vintage, following the Bordeaux model of a first wine and a second wine (Macán Clásico). Made from 100% Tempranillo selected from old vine plots on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria in Rioja Alta and Alavesa and aged for 16 to 18 months in two-thirds new French oak, it is named after the traditional word for the people of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. 2012 was a good and well-balanced Rioja vintage. Julia Harding MW from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17.5 out of 20, Thomas Matthews from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 90, and Josh Raynolds from Vinous gave it a rating of 93.

And, if possible, even more fragrant, impressive to find an expressive wine when it is otherwise still so youthful. Tannins are much thicker here, in a way that I associate with oak influence. Broad, fleshy and sweet, offering pliant blueberry, cherry-vanilla and mocha flavors that firm up slowly on the back half.
