R. Lopez de Heredia, founded in 1877 in Haro, is the most gloriously traditional producer in all of Rioja, ageing its wines for years in old oak, in cellars draped with cellar-mould, before release. Viña Cubillo is its Crianza, the most approachable of its reds, a Tempranillo-led blend from the Cubillo vineyard that still emerges with several years of age. 2016 was a superb Rioja vintage, marrying quality with freshness. Luis Gutiérrez from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Joaquín Hidalgo from Vinous each gave it a rating of 94, and Alison Napjus from Wine Spectator gave it 90.

"The 2016 Crianza Viña Cubillo, from Haro in Rioja Alta, underwent a three-year aging process in used oak barrels. Garnet in color, the wine reveals enticing notes of cherry marmalade, complemented by herbal, mint-like hints. Dry, intense and fairly grippy, the 2016 also features a mild chalky texture. Firm and juicy with a vibrant core, it presents itself as a flavorful red in its primary state. "Leather, tar and spice box aromas offer a fragrant overtone for this fresh, medium-bodied red. Fine, taut tannins sculpt flavors of dried cherry and cranberry, singed orange peel and cured tobacco.
