Valbuena 5° 2009
About this Item
Vega Sicilia, in Ribera del Duero, is Spain's most iconic estate. Valbuena 5° is released in its fifth year, a Tempranillo-based red that would be a flagship anywhere else but stands in the shadow of the legendary Único. 2009 was a very good Ribera del Duero vintage. Luis Gutiérrez from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 95, Josh Raynolds from Vinous gave it 94, and Thomas Matthews from Wine Spectator gave it 92.

"No, the 2009 Valbuena is not a current release, but I had a bottle blind at a tasting and most people, including myself, guessed it was a Grand Cru Burgundy, so aromatic, floral, expressive and elegant it was. We couldn't believe it when the wine was revealed. It is one of the best Valbuenas of recent times, with a rare combination of elegance and power, combining characters of fine Burgundy and elegant Syrah from the Northern Rhône." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Jan 2019)
"Opaque ruby. Spice- and mineral-accented aromas of dark berries, cherry pit and potpourri, with a toasty topnote. Minerally, incisive and sweet on the palate, offering smoky cherry and blackcurrant flavors complicated by vanilla, mocha and licorice. Shows impressive power and vivacity on the youthfully tannic finish, with the smoke and spice notes strongly repeating." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 94/100 (Sep 2014)
"Tobacco, cedar and sanguine notes mingle with dried cherry, spice and orange peel flavors in this firm red. The floral finish blooms pleasantly, showing harmony and depth. A traditional style." - Thomas Matthews, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Oct 2014)
