Dr Loosen

Riesling 2017

Germany
About the Session

This is the largest list of German wines Strauss & Co has ever offered! Once regarded as the greatest wines in the world, German and specifically Mosel Riesling are long aging and investment worthy. Running deep through the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer and across celebrated vintages including the ripe 2009, the warm 2018 and the racy, acclaimed 2019.
‘Trocken’ is the dry Riesling style, while ‘Kabinett’ is off-dry and ‘Spatlese’ and ‘Auslese’ are much sweeter. Another pointer, Is that the higher the alcohol, the more likely the wine is to be drier in style.

About this Item

Riesling 2017
4 (2 x 2) 750ml

This lot consists of the following wines
Dr Loosen Riesling 2017
Dr Loosen Riesling Red Slate Dry 2017

When Ernst Loosen took over his family’s Mosel estate in 1988, he turned Dr Loosen into one of Germany’s most celebrated names, championing tiny yields and a light hand that lets each site speak. This pairs two of the estate’s 2017 regional Rieslings: the fruity, off-dry Dr L, an approachable introduction to the house style drawn from classic slate vineyards along the river, and the dry Red Slate (Rotschiefer), a fuller, riper wine from the warm red-slate soils of villages such as Ürzig and Erden. 2017 was a small but classically proportioned Mosel vintage of racy, precise Rieslings.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

Dr Loosen Riesling Red Slate Dry 2017
“The 2017 Riesling Trocken Rotschiefer (aka Red Slate Dry) is clear, intense and lush on the ripe and well-concentrated nose with its warm slate and tropical fruit aromas. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and racy-piquant, and the finish is straight and fresh, with remarkable complexity, salt, grip and pronounced acidity.” - Stephan Reinhardt, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 90/100 (Jun 2019)

“Featuring more diverse fruits and more sheer juiciness than its ‘Blue Slate’ counterpart, this delivers scents and tangy palate presence of lime and apple tinged with smoke and stone. The feel is silken and the admirably clear and sustained finish adds an appealing hint of salinity. This bottling, sourced from Ürzig, Erden, Rachtig, Lösnich and Kinheim, is known as ‘Rotschiefer’ in German-speaking markets.” - David Schildknecht, Vinous (Aug 2018)
