Vollenweider
Goldgrube 2020
Germany
About the SessionThis is the largest list of German wines Strauss & Co has ever offered! Once regarded as the greatest wines in the world, German and specifically Mosel Riesling are long aging and investment worthy. Running deep through the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer and across celebrated vintages including the ripe 2009, the warm 2018 and the racy, acclaimed 2019.
‘Trocken’ is the dry Riesling style, while ‘Kabinett’ is off-dry and ‘Spatlese’ and ‘Auslese’ are much sweeter. Another pointer, Is that the higher the alcohol, the more likely the wine is to be drier in style.

Goldgrube 2020
About this Item
Weingut Vollenweider, at Traben-Trarbach on the Mosel, is the estate of the Swiss-born Daniel Vollenweider, who revived the old, own-rooted vines of the great Wolfer Goldgrube, a slate amphitheatre that is the heart of his range. This is a Riesling from that vineyard. 2020 was an excellent Mosel vintage. Stephan Reinhardt reviewed it for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

"From the Im Schöttel plot of the cru (which is located around the sundial) as well as the Im Jon, the 2020 Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling is deep, pure, intense, refreshingly stony, elegant and really exciting on the nose that delivers a new dimension compared to the Wolfer, which has intense fruit and generosity. Aged on the lees until a week before tasting, the wine is fresh and vivacious on the palate. This is a ripe, dense, very intense, pretty long and aromatic, stimulatingly salty and grippy Goldgrube with a very sustainable and tensioned yet not alcoholic finish. A classic in the making, this Riesling is gorgeous and has the potential for a long-distance run." - Stephan Reinhardt, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Dec 2021)
"AP number 07 21. That same initial mineral/spontaneous-fermentation aroma, as on the Wolfer Riesling; but here there's more obvious citrus aroma, more intense fruit breaking through the winemaking. Intense and precise on the palate. Lemon and lime purity and a long finish which grips your palate." - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20
"The 2020er Goldgrube Riesling, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is a dry wine (with 5 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit harvested on up to 100-year-old un-grafted vines. It offers a superbly complex and refined nose of lime tree, anise, ginger driven spices, white pepper, grapefruit zest, almond, smoke, and a hint of fresh pineapple. The wine is very playful and shows great balance. It has presence but also huge finesse and lightness despite all the complexity at play. The dry extract also brings energy. This is a magnificent dry Riesling. 2026-2040." (Reprint from Mosel Fine Wines Issue No 62 – June 2022) - 96/100.
