About this Item
Clos Apalta is the flagship of Casa Lapostolle and one of Chile's original cult wines, a Carmenère-led blend from old, dry-farmed vines in the natural amphitheatre of Apalta, vinified in a dramatic six-level gravity-flow cellar. The 2014 is 48% Carmenère with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged in new French oak. Kim Marcus from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 94, Luis Gutiérrez from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it 93, and Richard Hemming MW gave it 19+ out of 20.
Provenance
The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.
For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.
Critics Ratings
"Stunning nose: there's a quality to the fruit that is so distinctive and characterful. It has lovely mossy earthiness too, almost more mature than the 2012 – although the structure is certainly firmer. Attractive charred-meat character adds an animal complexity. Another superstar vintage for this wine." - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 19+/20 (Jun 2024)
"Refined and rich, featuring a concentrated array of dark fruit, savory herb and Asian spice flavors that are well-structured. Dark chocolate accents linger on the creamy and seductively savory finish, with hints of hot stone. Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot." - Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator, 94/100 (Nov 2018)
"The 2014 Clos Apalta is composed of 48% Carmenère, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot and has lots of tannins and some astringency. It really suffers when compared with the 2015, which feels longer and has a different quality of tannins, but I prefer both to the 2013. This matured in 100% new French oak barrels for 26 months. 62,388 bottles were filled in June 2016." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Oct 2018)
