David Abercrombie Donaldson was an influential artist and teacher, best known for serving as Painter and Limner to Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland, an ancient title of the Scottish Court. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1932 to 1937, where he won the Director's Prize and the Haldane Travelling Scholarship. After a further year of study, he began teaching at the school part-time, later becoming a full-time teacher and head of the department of drawing and painting.

Throughout his career he took part in a number of acclaimed exhibitions, including a 1961 solo exhibition at Henry Hillier's Studio in Glasgow, as well as shows at The French Institute and the Mall Galleries. He is best known for his portraits and is recognised as one of Scotland's leading portrait painters.
