About this Item

Vin de Constance 2001
3 (1 x 3) 500ml
Klein Constantia is the historic Constantia estate south of Cape Town, and Vin de Constance is its revival of the legendary eighteenth-century sweet Muscat de Frontignan once prized by Napoleon and the courts of Europe. Unfortified and naturally sweet, made from late-harvested, partly raisined Muscat and bottled in its distinctive flacon, it is South Africa's most celebrated dessert wine. The 2001 is a celebrated older vintage, now mature. Richard Hemming MW gave it 17 out of 20, Alison Napjus from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 94, and Stephen Tanzer from Vinous gave it a rating of 91.

Critics Ratings

"Drop-dead gorgeous nose: lots of spice, honey, raisins. Thrilling acidic line. Oxidised notes on the finish, giving a bruised, orange-peel finish – but that doesn't compromise the quality." - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jul 2023)

"A polished mahogany hue, this is reminiscent of tawny Port on the nose, carrying the theme on the palate with a thread of roasted nuts that underscores notes of dried apricot, butterscotch and dried mint. The rich profile is still bright and balanced today by lively, mandarin orange peel acidity, and the finish echoes milled white pepper, white truffle and lemon oil." - Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 94/100 (Oct 2024)

"Bright orange-gold. Aromas of peach nectar, marzipan and five-spice powder, with a floral muscat lift. Very sweet, fat and full, with notes of honey, herbs and flowers. Just a tad bitter-edged; this concentrated wine is actually in a distinctly closed stage today. Klein Constantia's famous sweet wine has a history dating back two centuries." - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91/100 (Mar 2007)
