About this Item

Vin de Constance 2005
6 (1 x 6) 500ml
Klein Constantia is the historic Constantia estate south of Cape Town, and Vin de Constance is its revival of the legendary eighteenth-century sweet Muscat de Frontignan once prized by Napoleon and the courts of Europe. Unfortified and naturally sweet, made from late-harvested, partly raisined Muscat and bottled in its distinctive flacon, it is South Africa's most celebrated dessert wine. The 2005 is a fine, ageworthy vintage. Richard Hemming MW gave it 17.5 out of 20, James Molesworth from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 94, Stephen Tanzer from Vinous gave it a rating of 93+, and Neal Martin from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 92.

Critics Ratings

"Burnt caramel, marmalade, oranges, knife-edge acidity, lots of sticky sugar on the finish – but not at all cloying. Great length, complex, generous and broad." - Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Sep 2010)

"Pure orange peel, tangerine, persimmon and clementine flavors are laced with hints of green tea, candied lime peel and honeysuckle. Rich, but racy and mouthwatering. The gorgeous amber color and a caressing mouthfeel just add to the pleasure. Lovely precision. Should age nicely." - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 94/100 (Jul 2010)

"Full deep gold. Lovely perfumed nose combines cherry, orange peel, apricot, honey, sexy spices and wild herbs. Very sweet and extremely concentrated wine, with intriguing floral and spice notes contributing a tangy quality to the intense apricot, honeysuckle and yellow raisin flavors. The extremely long, honeyed finish boasts outstanding energy and floral lift. Harmonious from the outset but capable of many years of evolution in bottle." - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 93+/100 (Mar 2011)

"The 2005 Vin de Constance is a very different beast to the 2007 and 2008: light on the nose with touches of hazelnut, dried quince and wet wool. It does not possess the intensity or the complexity of later vintages but leaving it for 10 minutes it opens up beautifully with orange blossom and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with an elegant, refined opening. The acidity is extremely well-judged with pure honey, marmalade, Turkish Delight and apricot. It is long and sensual and returning to the nose, it coalesces and seems to achieve more penetration with time." - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Oct 2013)
