About this Item

Chardonnay 2014
3 (1 x 3) 1500ml
Hamilton Russell, established in 1975 near Hermanus, pioneered cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Its barrel-fermented Chardonnay, grown on stony, clay-rich shale soils, is a long-standing South African benchmark. 2014 was a cooler, classic Cape vintage that suited cool-climate whites, giving a tighter, more mineral and age-worthy style. Offered here in magnum. Jancis Robinson MW gave it 17 out of 20, James Molesworth from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 92, and Stephen Tanzer from Vinous gave it a rating of 93.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

"Depth to the nose of this wine. Savour and one of the most burgundian of South Africa. Surely vine age plays a part here? Restraint but promise. Could withstand comparison with the rest of the world. Much more mineral than fruity." - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Feb 2015)

"Very alluring, with creamed Jonagold apple, heather, brioche and elderflower honey notes that all glide seamlessly, picking up an enticing hazelnut hint on the finish. Shows lovely mouthfeel and length." - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Jun 2015)

"Bright yellow gold. Rich, musky peach, lime and clove aromas convey an impression of energy. Very dry and delineated, showing bracing limey acidity and captivating burgundian nut oil and stone fruit flavours. Refined, light on its feet and very long but in need of at least a couple of years in bottle to expand and express itself. This consistently excellent South African Chardonnay has a track record for aging." - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 93/100 (Apr 2015)
