Critics Ratings
Newton Johnson CWG Sandford Chardonnay 2020
"Showing the reserved power and concentration of a Corton-Charlemagne, this is a small volume lot for the Cape Winemakers' Guild. All sourced from the south-facing Sandford vineyard, it has aromas of kelp and gunflint, subtle 35% oak, cinnamon spice, leesy intensity and citrus and clementine fruit." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2022, 96/100 (Sep 2022)
"The 2020 Chardonnay CWG Sandford sees no SO2 before fermentation like the other cuvées, some oxidation at the press, around 40% first press straight into mainly newer barrels. This has a really classy bouquet with precise, quite minerally yellow fruit, just a very slight reduction that works to its benefit. The palate is well balanced with a smooth, harmonious texture and perfectly pitched acidity with well integrated oak towards the finish. This is utterly delicious." - Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Aug 2022)
Newton Johnson CWG Windansea Pinot Noir 2020
“Even better than the regular Windansea release, and that’s saying a good deal, this Cape Winemakers’ Guild auction lot comes from a stonier part of the vineyard. Paler and more delicate, it’s an unfined, unfiltered delight with appealing aromatic spices, fine-grained tannins and layers of raspberry, black cherry and strawberry fruit. An exceptional Pinot Noir.” - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2022, 97/100 (Sep 2022)
