About this Item

Vrede Chardonnay 2020
3 (1 x 3) 750ml
Storm Wines is the acclaimed project of Hannes Storm, long the winemaker at Hamilton Russell, who since 2012 has made site-specific Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from three single vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde. The Vrede Chardonnay comes from a warmer, north-facing site at the bottom of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. 2020 was a cooler, balanced Cape vintage. Tamlyn Currin from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17 out of 20, Alison Napjus from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 92, and Tim Atkin MW scored it 94 in his South Africa Special Report 2021.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

"Slightly popcorn nose to begin with. But more restrained on the palate, holding back. More apple notes. Sage and green fig and stoniness. Beautiful old-stone-wall texture and minerality. Gentle, quiet and firm." - Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Oct 2023)

"An elegant, well-knit version, with good cut to the acidity, buoying detailed notes of persimmon and golden apple, chamomile and honeysuckle, orange curd and chopped almond. Lingering, lightly spiced finish." - Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Aug 2022)

"Hannes Storm's Vrede Chardonnay comes from a warm site at the bottom part of the vineyard on a north-facing slope. Fermented with 50% malolactic, it's a textured, structured Chardonnay with floral aromas, some passion fruit and citrus, a hint of marzipan and a surprisingly fresh, focused finish." - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 94/100 (Sep 2021)
