Armand Rousseau Père et Fils

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques 2018

Burgundy International - Red
About the Session

Session 3 is devoted to red Burgundy, drawing together some of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Grower estates such as Armand Rousseau, Denis Mortet, Denis Bachelet, Georges Lignier and Ghislaine Barthod anchor a run of grand and premier cru Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne-Romanée, while a extraordinary group of lots from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, including Échézeaux, Grands Échézeaux, Richebourg, La Tâche and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, forms the session's centrepiece. Rounded out by classic bottlings from Volnay, Pommard and Nuits-Saint-Georges, plus a scattering of Beaujolais crus, this session offers exceptional depth for Pinot Noir collectors.

Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of the most revered estates in all Burgundy, farming a peerless block of Gevrey-Chambertin grands and premiers crus. Critics Ratings

“A mix of pepper and dark floral character. Deliciously scented (not perfumed). Open-armed from the start. Come hither. On the palate, juicy, surprisingly dense but still with that mix of savoury spice and floral, pure dark fruit. Less open on the palate than on the nose. Paper-fine texture, fresh and long with impeccable harmony. I can imagine drinking this now. The sample was taken from a new barrel but it doesn’t show.” - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18.5/20 (Dec 2019)

“The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an ethereal bouquet with dark cherry, blueberry, light wilted rose petal and shucked oyster shell scents. It unfolds beautifully in the glass, possibly the classiest and more alluring of the CSJ quintet. The palate is well balanced with finely-chiselled red cherry fruit intermixed with raspberry, crushed stone and a dab of spice. Harmonious through to the structured finish. The mineralité shines through this wine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.” - Neal Martin, Vinous, 96/100 (Nov 2022)

“A rich, solidly built red, with expressive aromas of exotic spices, sandalwood and toasty oak that lead to cherry, black currant and tobacco flavors. Balanced, with a dusting of medium tannins on the long finish.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 96/100 (May 2022)

“The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has turned out brilliantly in bottle. Unwinding in the glass with notes of red berries, cassis and peonies, mingled with hints of woodsmoke, raw cocoa, orange rind and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, structured around ripe, powdery tannins, it’s layered and lively, maintaining impeccable balance in this warm vintage. Long and penetrating, this is more tightly wound in bottle than it was from barrel, something that bodes very well for its long-term evolution.” - William Kelley, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 95+/100 (Sep 2021)
