About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barolo Brunate 2014
3 (1 x 3) 750ml
The Marengo family estate in La Morra produces single-vineyard Barolo from the Brunate cru in the Barolo commune, a site celebrated for its translucent, ethereal and expressive Nebbiolo of characteristic dark cherry and floral character. In the challenging 2014 vintage, marked by heavy late-season rainfall that forced rigorous selection, Marengo produced no Riserva and devoted all of the Brunate fruit to this straight bottling. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17++ out of 20, Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 92, and Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 93.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Cherry, strawberry, tar and underbrush aromas and flavors signal this supple red. Rich and accessible, showing fine balance, harmony and length.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Oct 2018)

“The 2014 Barolo Brunate is another powerful, imposing wine from Marco Marengo. Deep and pliant through the middle, with a huge core of fruit, the 2014 has much to offer. Black cherry, plum, lavender, leather and smoke infuse the deep, resonant finish. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 ages. At this stage, it clearly holds quite a bit of promise. In 2014, there is no Riserva; all the fruit was used for this, the straight Brunate bottling.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100 (Nov 2017)

“Mid ruby with bricky rim. Beautiful, concentrated, perfumed nose with hints of dry stalks. Succulent cherry fruit that holds up the fine, grainy tannins, super-elegant, lithe and transparent.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17++/20 (Apr 2018)
