Italy
About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Barolo Brunate 2010
2 (1 x 2) 750ml,1500ml
The Brunate single vineyard Barolo from one of the cru's most dedicated custodians. The Marengo family has farmed its plot in the celebrated Brunate vineyard in La Morra for five generations, first bottling the wine under the Brunate label with the 1974 vintage. Brunate is renowned for producing Barolo of translucent, ethereal character: deeply aromatic with dark cherry, violets and licorice rather than the more austere tannic power of Serralunga. The 2010, from an exceptional Barolo vintage widely considered among the finest in decades, displays all the signatures of this great site in a format designed for long cellar ageing. Jancis Robinson MW gave it 17+ out of 20, and Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 94.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Bright, transparent crimson. Unusually creamy texture and masses of still-unformed fruit. Still quite chewy with some 'ashy' quality on the finish.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Mar 2023)

“Dark red cherries, plums, smoke, licorice and violets burst from the glass in the 2010 Barolo Brunate. Translucent, transparent, yet powerful, the Brunate shows all the signatures of this great site. Here, too, the wine clearly needs time, but the balance is unquestionably quite fine. In particular, the wine's inner sweetness and pure perfume will thrill readers who like aromatically expressive Barolos.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94/100 (Jan 2014)
