About the SessionItaly dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings
Marengo Barolo 2015
“A whiff of vanilla settles into cherry, plum, leather and baking spice flavors as this red builds on the palate. Polished, with a layer of civilized tannins for support.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Sep 2020)
“Marco Marengo's 2015 Barolo is lovely. Medium in body, gracious and lifted, the straight Barolo is a terrific wine in its peer group. Sweet red fruit and floral notes are front and center in a mid-weight, nuanced Barolo that speaks with a sense of energy. It is a terrific entry-level offering from Marengo.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91/100 (Feb 2019)
Pio Cesare Barolo 2015
“Medium-deep ruby with orange tinges. Lifted peppery, cherry nose with quite a bit of brooding concentration and minerally notes. Hint of liquorice. Quite sweet and round attack and perfectly integrated acidity on the palate, but the tannins build up notably on the finish. Elegant and with a powerful finish. Has ageing potential.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Dec 2018)
“A lean, tightly wound style, displaying light cherry, licorice, tobacco and mineral flavors. A streak of iron builds as this plays out on the austere finish.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Dec 2019)
“The 2015 Barolo from Pio Cesare is a very pretty wine that captures all of the intrigue of Nebbiolo, especially in its beguiling, racy aromatics. Medium in body yet full in flavor, the straight Barolo is just terrific in 2015. Despite its mid-weight structure, the 2015 has quite a bit of persistence and energy. It is such a pretty and expressive wine.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91/100 (Aug 2019)
Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2015
“Charming aromas of cherry, strawberry and rose are inviting in this red, with flavors to match, showing ripeness and focus. Earth and mineral elements chime in as this firms up, but the harmony is there and this should really sing in about five years.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Dec 2018)
“Barbaresco. Tasted blind. Concentrated ruby. Lots of concentrated, sweet cherry fruit and grainy tannins and plenty of acidity, too. Generous, tannic and long with youthful vigour but can be approached now. Good ageing potential.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Jul 2018)
