About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Ciabot Berton,Famiglia Anselma,Marengo,Vietti 2012,2014,2017
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
This lot consists of the following wines:
Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri 2017 (2 x 750ml)
Famiglia Anselma Barolo del Comune di Monforte 2017 (2 x 750ml)
Marengo Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2014 (1 x 750ml)
Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2012 (1 x 750ml)

Four Barolos spanning three vintages and some of the appellation's most characterful communes. Ciabot Berton's Roggeri 2017, from the Oberto family's La Morra estate bottling Barolo since 1961, shows aromatic purity and sour cherry precision from a frost-reduced, concentrated vintage, awarded 17++ by Speller at JancisRobinson.com. Famiglia Anselma's 2017 from Monforte d'Alba brings the commune's characteristic tannic structure and ripe, camphor-spiced depth, rated 94 by O'Keefe at Wine Enthusiast. Marengo's Bricco delle Viole 2014, from a challenging vintage that demanded rigorous selection, shows an unusually dark and concentrated expression of this altitude-influenced La Morra site, awarded 92 by Galloni at Vinous. Vietti's Castiglione 2012 blends fruit from four communes in a generous, structured vintage, rated 93 by Galloni at Vinous.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri 2017
“La Morra. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. A pretty nose of peppery aromatic cherry and talcum powder and the merest suggestion of oak. A core of ripe sour cherry with firm, finely ground tannins on the palate.....” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17++/20 (Jul 2022)

Famiglia Anselma Barolo del Comune di Monforte 2017
“Camphor, leather, underbrush and toasted nut aromas mingle with pipe tobacco on this full-bodied red. Showing the heat of the vintage, the full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, ground clove and star anise framed in close-grained, drying tannins.” - Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, 94/100 (Oct 2022)

Marengo Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2014
“An unusual dark ruby for this very short and rainy vintage. Perfumed nose that is a little rich with marasca cherry notes. Good concentration of fruit and well balanced with bags of grainy tannins and integrated acidity. Closed on the finish, but this clearly has potential.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Apr 2018)

“Usually a lifted, delicate wine, the 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is dark, imposing and very much closed in on itself. The fruit profile is also quite a bit darker than is typically the case.....” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92/100 (Nov 2017)

Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2012
“A spicy version, with sandalwood- and vanilla-tinged cherry, strawberry, floral and tobacco flavors. Balanced toward the tannins, yet elegant overall, leaving a firm, dry finish.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 91/100 (Apr 2017)

“The 2012 Barolo Castiglione is a gorgeous, radiant wine. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, wild flowers and spices all meld together in a sensual Barolo endowed with striking presence and intensity. In 2012, the Castiglione is especially lifted and expressive, with compelling purity and nuance. With time in the glass, the wine freshens up considerably, so aeration is a good idea for readers who want to open the 2012 early. This is an attractive, seriously delicious Barolo from Vietti.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100 (Nov 2015)
