About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Poderi Colla,Rocche Costamagna,Silvano Bolmida 2017
6 (3 x 2) 750ml
This lot consists of the following wines:
Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia 2017 (2 x 750ml)
Rocche Costamagna Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata 2017 (2 x 750ml)
Silvano Bolmida Barolo Le Coste di Monforte 2017 (2 x 750ml)

Three traditionally made Barolos from the challenging 2017 vintage, shaped by April frost that sharply reduced yields and a hot, concentrated summer producing wines of notable ripeness, power and forward character. Poderi Colla's Bussia Dardi Le Rose comes from a south-facing parcel in Monforte d'Alba with a lineage stretching back to 1961, when Beppe Colla produced the first ever cru-labelled Barolo; Speller at JancisRobinson.com awarded it 17+ and Galloni at Vinous 94+. Rocche Costamagna's Rocche dell'Annunziata draws on over two centuries of history in La Morra, rated 94 by Sanderson at Wine Spectator, 93 by Galloni at Vinous and 16 by Robinson MW. Silvano Bolmida's Le Coste di Monforte, a small traditional family estate in the Bussia area, received 93 from Galloni at Vinous.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia 2017
“Just mid ruby with bricky rim. Brooding and ripe but not yet open on the nose. Mouth-filling red fruit matched by long chewy tannins and perfectly balanced. Great tannic grip on a plush fruit finish.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Jul 2021)

“The 2017 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is superb. Classy and poised, the 2017 captures all the personality of Bussia. The Colla Barolos typically need a few years to shine. I imagine that will be the case here as well. As attractive as the 2017 is today, the best is yet to come. Crushed flowers, spice, sweet pipe tobacco and incense lend considerable nuance to a core of sweet Nebbiolo fruit. What a pretty wine this is.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94+/100 (Sep 2021)

Rocche Costamagna Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata 2017
“NB vintage! Rust-coloured rim on a ruby wine. Light compost nose. Very sweet, but actually rather charming fruit because there is some evolution here. A little light and tart overall but serviceable.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16/20 (Nov 2022)

“This is rich and broad, featuring plum, cherry, leather, spice, tobacco and mineral flavors. Complex and beautifully balanced, with lively tannins directing the finish, this red shows class and finesse. Fruit, mineral and spice accents prevail on the aftertaste.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 94/100 (Nov 2021)

“The 2017 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is forward, open-knit and very nicely balanced. Silky tannins wrap around a core of succulent red berry fruit. Medium in body, gracious and so inviting, the 2017 will be easy to drink and enjoy pretty much upon release and for a number of years thereafter.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100 (Jan 2021)

Silvano Bolmida Barolo Le Coste di Monforte 2017
“Silvano Bolmida's 2017 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte offers a good deal of breadth and intensity. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather and tobacco open first, followed by hints of melted road tar, rose petal, incense, kirsch and blood orange that add layers of beguiling, exotic beauty. This deceptively mid-weight Barolo packs plenty of punch.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100 (Nov 2021)
