About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Caparzo,Castello Banfi 2010
2 (1 x 2) 750ml
This lot consists of the following wines:
Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 2010 (1 x 750ml)
Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura 2010 (1 x 750ml)

Two Brunello di Montalcinos from the celebrated 2010 vintage, widely regarded as one of the greatest recent years for the appellation. Castello Banfi's Poggio alle Mura is a special vineyard selection aged in French barrique and Slavonian oak, brooding and deeply concentrated with blackberry, tar and liquorice over firm tannins built for the long term, awarded 95 by Larner at Wine Advocate. Caparzo, one of Montalcino's pioneer estates established in 1970, produces a more lifted and accessible expression from the northern part of the appellation, combining cherry, cigar box and leather over a vibrant, finely balanced finish, awarded 17 out of 20 by Robinson MW.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@briceandburnett.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 2010
“Bright ruby. Heady and beautifully aromatic with warmth and leaf mould. Lovely and composed. Neat but not showy. Notably clean and refreshing.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jul 2015)

“Cigar box and leather aromas are balanced by strawberry and cherry notes at the core. There is a vibrant, refreshing quality here, with a long, complex aftertaste.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Jun 2015)

“Bright red cherries, plums, smoke, tobacco, flowers, cedar and spices are all beautifully delineated in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. Vibrant and lifted throughout, the 2010 captures the freshness of the vintage in spades. Already soft and accessible, the 2010 can be enjoyed now or cellared for a decade or so.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100 (Feb 2015)

Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura 2010
“Very heavy bottle! Dark ruby with orange tinges. Oak notes on the nose, but otherwise pretty much locked up. Super-concentrated fruit palate, which steers clear of being heavy, but only just. The tangy finish is loaded with rather tough tannins, but they may mellow out with time.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 16/20 (Jan 2015)

“The special vineyard selection 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura opens to brooding dark concentration and an impressive sense of depth. The aromas that characterize the wine are in a school of their own. Instead of the standard red cherry and rose, this expression of Sangiovese gives you rich layers of blackberry pie, Indian spice, cured meat, wet terra-cotta, tar and black licorice. Some 90% of the wine is aged in French barrique and the remaining portion sees large oak casks made with Slavonian oak. Dive further and you begin to sense chocolate and toasted espresso. The tannin management is excellent and there's a distant point of textural firmness that will soften with a few more years of cellar aging.” - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Feb 2015)
