About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

Four Brunello di Montalcinos from two outstanding vintages spanning some of the appellation's most historic estates. From 2012, Conti Costanti's Colle al Matrichese, one of Montalcino's most storied properties with family roots dating to the sixteenth century, was awarded 17+ by Speller at JancisRobinson.com and 94 by D'Agata at Vinous. Gianni Brunelli's organically farmed estate, which preserves vines from a 1947 planting, received an exceptional 17.5 from Speller at JancisRobinson.com.

From 2013, widely regarded as one of the finest recent Brunello vintages for elegance, balance and ageing potential. Le Chiuse brings extraordinary provenance as the former source of Biondi-Santi's celebrated Riserva, awarded a remarkable 18 out of 20 by Speller at JancisRobinson.com and 96+ by Larner at Wine Advocate. Lisini, a founding member of the Brunello Consorzio in 1967, produces traditional Brunello from large Slavonian oak in the south-western zone, rated 96 by Sanderson at Wine Spectator.

Critics Ratings

Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino 2012
“Healthy, concentrated ruby. Firm, but closed nose and tannic, concentrated fruit on the palate. Really gripping, unpolished and youthful. Long, chewy finish. Grows on you.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Jan 2017)

“Sweet cherry, licorice, leather and wild herb aromas and flavors converge on the dense structure of this red, which takes on a tannic edge as it plays out. There's plenty of fruit, and all the components seem to be in the right proportions.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Jun 2017)

“Vivid dark red. Ripe aromas of red cherry, blood orange and stone fruit. Smooth, dense and juicy, with flavors similar to the aromas but complicated by notes of fresh herbs, sweet spices and hints of flint. Long and suave, with noble but youthfully chewy tannins providing support. Knockout classic Brunello, in fact, one of the year's best.” - Ian D'Agata, Vinous, 94/100 (Feb 2017)

Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino 2012
“Tasted blind. Lifted, leafy ripe cherry and strawberry nose with a fine, leesy note. Succulent and with youthful austerity. Long, perfumed, tannic finish. Long and complex raspberry finish and almost burgundian in style. Deserves more age, but already hard to resist.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20 (Jan 2017)

“The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with all of the aromas of a traditional fruitcake on Christmas Day, as an assortment of rum-soaked berries, raisins, brown spice, molasses and cloves fill the senses. It's velvety in texture, yet more lifted than anticipated, with tart red fruits and nuances of blood orange over a tension-building core of brisk acidity. A hint of powdered cocoa and sour cherries lingers, as the 2012 finishes fresh, a bit shorter than expected, yet still harmonious and full of life. What a beauty.” - Eric Guido, Vinous, 93/100 (Oct 2022)

Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino 2013
“Lustrous mid ruby and still youthful. Complex undergrowth-and-mineral nose. A pinch of exotic spice, like soy sauce. I would decant this. Precise and pure on the palate and with beautiful, firm, coating tannins that are like a wall-to-wall carpet. Ripe acidity adding tension. Proper old school. Has just started its ascent.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20 (Jun 2024)

“A ripe style, sporting black pepper, cherry, plum and licorice flavors, accented by earth and tobacco notes. Shows enough freshness and structure for aging, with a fine, lingering aftertaste.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Jun 2018)

“Le Chiuse delivers an impeccable wine that beautifully captures the classic side of this elegant vintage. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a gorgeous garnet color that is both luminous and sultry. The bouquet takes a minute or two to reach cruising altitude. Once it does, it reveals wild cherry, rose hip, blanched almond and sassy licorice or spice. It is aged in large oak casks for 38 months, and the fruit is farmed organically. This is an absolute breakout vintage for Le Chiuse, and the wine already shows the textural richness for prolonged aging. Bravo!” - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 96+/100 (Feb 2018)

Lisini Brunello di Montalcino 2013
“Mid to deep ruby. Exotic spice and cherry nose with nutty (oak?) notes and, with aeration, a hint of leather. A little wild even. Lifted cherry with exotic spice hints on the palate. Racy and light yet precise with lots of chewy tannins. Burgundian, more than anything.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Feb 2018)

“Exuding cherry, strawberry and floral flavors tinged with iron, earth and spice notes, this ripe red is elegant in profile, tightly wound and deftly balanced, ending with a kick of fruit, spice and mineral elements.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 96/100 (Jun 2018)

“The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino lifts from the glass with a spicy and earthy bouquet, leading off with hints of animal musk, green olive and woodland herbs. Notes of sour cherry, cedar shavings and blood orange open with time in the glass. This is round and soothing on the palate, with juicy acidity and mineral-drenched red berry fruit tones that saturate. A core of vibrant acidity maintains fantastic balance, as adolescent tannins pinch at the cheeks. The 2013 finishes remarkably fresh and spicy, lingering with a sweet, wild berry resonance that calls the taster back to the glass. This is beautiful today and will surely pay dividends in the cellar.” - Eric Guido, Vinous, 94/100 (Feb 2024)
