About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Bolgheri Superiore 2015
5 (1 x 5) 750ml
Founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari as the second winery established in Bolgheri after Tenuta San Guido, Grattamacco helped pioneer the appellation and remains one of its most respected estates; acquired by Claudio Tipa in 2002, with winemaker Luca Marrone upholding its commitment to organic viticulture and a Sangiovese-inclusive blend alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2015 was an outstanding year across the coastal Tuscan appellations, warm and generous, producing wines of exceptional concentration and depth. Tim Jackson MW from JancisRobinson.com gave it 16.5 out of 20, Monica Larner from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 97, and Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 95.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Mid-deep black-ruby. Dark chocolate, vanilla and clove spice oak. Ripe cassis and black cherry can be coaxed from beneath. Juicy acidity, then quite grainy tannins, notably more coarsely textured than the 2016. Some warmth of alcohol and baked character too.” - Tim Jackson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (May 2019)

“The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is big, bold and absolutely stunning. This blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese is dark and luscious, with overlapping melodies of tobacco, spice, dark fruit and grilled herb. There is so much depth and power. This vintage is a gem for your cellar, and the wine should award a long aging trajectory for those who have the patience to wait.” - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 97/100 (May 2019)

“Complex cherry, currant, mineral, spice and tobacco aromas signal this serious version. Despite the ripe fruit flavors and sweet tones, this has grip and the potential for development. Hangs together nicely now, in a youthful phase. Shows terrific length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 95/100 (Oct 2018)
