Marchesi Antinori, among the oldest and most influential wine families in Italy, established Tenuta Guado al Tasso on the coastal plain of Bolgheri, where a maritime climate and free-draining gravel soils favour Bordeaux varieties. Guado al Tasso is the estate flagship, a Cabernet Sauvignon led blend completed with Cabernet Franc and Merlot. In 2018 the Cabernet Franc based Matarocchio was not produced, so its finest fruit was channelled into this wine, raising the Cabernet Franc share to around a fifth of the blend alongside roughly sixty percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The outcome is an unusually silky, polished and gracious expression of the estate that drew admiring notes across the critical spectrum.
