About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Brunello di Montalcino 2015
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Tenuta Il Poggione was established in 1890 by Lavinio Franceschi near Sant'Angelo in Colle on the southern slopes of Montalcino, and was one of the original three producers to market Brunello commercially and a founding member of the Brunello Consorzio in 1967; the Franceschi family is now in its fifth generation and winemakers Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci have maintained the estate's traditional style of long maceration and large Slavonian oak botti for almost five decades. The 2015, from a warm and generous vintage, shows the particularly concentrated and powerful character that Il Poggione's warmer southern location produces in great years. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 17+ out of 20, Monica Larner from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a rating of 97, and Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 95.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Maturing, concentrated ruby with bricky rim. Compact, youthful yet concentrated on the nose with nutty notes. I would decant this. Polished juicy cherry and raspberry fruit. Long and almost a little mouth-watering. Clearly evolving and now at its peak, the palate is lush yet cool and with finely ground tannins that steal the show.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Jul 2025)

“The Il Poggione 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a darker and more concentrated appearance than many of its peers. The wine is beautifully abundant and fragrant in the most exuberant and expressive manner. You will recognize aromas of moist soil, tobacco and smoke. Candied cherry hovers over the entire bouquet. Fruit is sourced from older vines (all over 25 years old). Il Poggione occupies a special spot within the Montalcino appellation, and the area always produces slightly more concentrated and powerful wines. I find that to be particularly true in this gorgeous 2015 vintage.” - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 97/100 (Jan 2020)
