About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Brunello di Montalcino 2018
6 (1 x 6) 750ml
Argiano is one of Montalcino's historic estates, its cellars dating to the late sixteenth century on a hilltop in the warmer south west of the appellation. This Brunello is pure Sangiovese aged in large oak in the traditional manner. The 2018 Brunello vintage was warm and generous, producing wines of good concentration and approachability while altitude and cool nights preserved the freshness essential to Sangiovese from this appellation. Walter Speller from JancisRobinson.com gave it 16.5 out of 20, Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 95, and Eric Guido from Vinous gave it a rating of 92.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

Critics Ratings

“Maturing mid ruby with orange tinges. Soft, sweet fruit nose that is not entirely open. Ripe fruit flavours layered with supple acidity. Seems straightforward but the finish is surprisingly layered and well balanced with cracking tannins.” - Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Nov 2022)

“Rose, strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors are the main themes in this red, along with wild herb, mineral and cut hay accents. Racy and full of energy, with a long, saturated finish.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 95/100 (Jun 2023)

“The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with a dark and balsamic blend of black cherries, worn leather and savory herbs. This is soft-textured and supple on the palate, gaining tension through a mix of tart wild berries and nuances of sour citrus, as a hint of sage adds contrast toward the close. It finishes grippy and long, leaving a staining of primary concentration to linger, as tarry red currants and hints of graphite linger on. The 2018 is currently wrapped up tightly in its youthful state, demanding cellaring to reveal its charms.” - Eric Guido, Vinous, 92/100 (Oct 2022)
