About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Brunello di Montalcino 2001
5 (1 x 5) 750ml
Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, a grain merchant who moved to Montalcino in pursuit of great Sangiovese, and the estate passed to his son Giacomo on Giovanni’s death in 1991. The house became one of the defining names of the modern style of Brunello, producing powerful, deeply coloured and richly textured wines, and its 2001 Tenuta Nuova was named Wine Spectator Wine of the Year in 2006. This is the estate’s classico Brunello, drawn from a celebrated and structured 2001 vintage and aged three years in cask.

Critics Ratings

“The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino, which saw three years in cask, opens with a perfumed, aromatic nose followed by layers of dark cherry fruit, licorice and tar that develop in the glass with outstanding purity and definition. It offers notable balance and harmony.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91/100 (Aug 2006)
