About the Session

Italy dominates the auction, led by a considerable depth of Tuscan greats. Fontodi spans the full range of the estate from the benchmark Chianti Classico through multiple vintages of Flaccianello della Pieve, their iconic Sangiovese IGT, to the crown jewel Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The jewel in the crown of Tuscan reds, Brunello di Montalcino is well represented with offerings from Il Poggione, Casanova di Neri, Silvio Nardi, and the rare Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta. A group of curated Italian Collections rounds out the Italian session, offering mixed selections ideal for those seeking range across multiple producers in a single lot.

About this Item

Sodi di San Niccolò 2007
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
Founded in 1975 by Paolo Panerai, journalist and publisher, through the union of four estates - Castellare, Caselle, San Niccolò and Le Case - in the heart of Chianti Classico near Castellina in Chianti; the estate pioneered the revival of indigenous Tuscan varieties and in 1988 became the first Italian wine to rank in Wine Spectator's Top 10, when the 1985 I Sodi di San Niccolò was included. I Sodi di San Niccolò is an 85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera blend from the hard soil (sodi) parcels of the estate below the 14th-century church of San Niccolò. The 2007 was a warm and opulent Tuscan vintage. Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave it a rating of 95, Bruce Sanderson from Wine Spectator gave it a rating of 90, and Ian D'Agata from Vinous gave it a rating of 94.

Critics Ratings

“The 2007 I Sodi di San Niccolo saturates the palate with masses of rich, dark fruit. The 2007 is very much a product of the year. Warm, open and resonant, the 2007 is one of the bigger wines made at Castellare over the last three decades. There is an immediacy that is quite appealing, but the wine's bombastic personality needs some time to settle down. Although delicious today, the 2007 should also age quite well based on its sheer opulence.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 95/100 (Jun 2012)

“This cuts a broad swath across the palate, with dense plum, black cherry and spice flavors. Chunky in profile, with dusty tannins and a salty licorice finish. Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera. Better than previously reviewed.” - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 90/100 (Dec 2011)

“Medium ruby-red. Deep, complex aromas of ripe red cherry, raspberry jam, roasted herbs and mint. Fat and lush but sappy and delineated, with pliant, creamy ripe red fruit flavors accented by aromatic herbs. Finishes with big, broad, ripe tannins and a note of sweet pipe tobacco. Obviously the product of a hot vintage, but this doesn't come across as heavy or phenolically unripe. A very luscious style of Sodi: those who like big, creamy wines will probably rate this even higher.” - Ian D'Agata, Vinous, 94/100 (Sep 2012)
