About this Item

Saint-Émilion 2008
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
The 2008 Saint-Émilion vintage produced wines of elegant, restrained character and precise fruit definition, rewarding estates that managed the difficult growing season with care and low yields. Château Teyssier’s 2008 earned 90/100 from Robert Parker, who praised its dense ruby/purple colour, outstanding fruit, impressive purity and nicely textured mouthfeel, and noted it as always made in an up-front and satisfying style. Teyssier is the home estate of Jonathan Maltus, the British winemaker who arrived in Saint-Émilion in 1994 when the property had been reduced to just five neglected hectares, and subsequently expanded it to over 50 hectares while building one of the appellation’s most admired portfolios of premium micro-cuvées including Le Dôme, Les Astéries and Vieux Château Mazerat. Maltus later became the first Englishman to receive 100 Parker points. The estate dates to the 1700s and was at one point the largest wine producer in its sector of the Right Bank. The blend is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc from sandy soils with iron subsoil in the Vignonet commune.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Dense ruby/purple colour and soft berry fruit, with hints of cedar, vanilla and foresty, earthy notes. Medium-bodied with outstanding fruit, impressive purity and a nicely textured mouthfeel. Always made in an up-front and satisfying style.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90/100 (May 2011)
