About this Item

Côtes de Bordeaux 2010
1 (1 x 1) 750ml
The 2010 Right Bank harvest produced wines of exceptional concentration and freshness, and Château Puygueraud’s 2010 earned 16/20 from Jancis Robinson MW, who found it polished, lively and well done with a dry, appetising finish, and was praised by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate as an elegantly surprising, lush and fruit-forward wine of rare quality for this unheralded appellation, produced under the direction of Nicolas Thienpont and Stéphane Derenoncourt. Puygueraud is the flagship estate of the Thienpont family in the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, purchased by George Thienpont in 1946 on the limestone-clay hills east of Saint-Émilion, near the appellations of Castillon and Puisseguin. The first vines were planted in the late 1970s after years of mixed farming, and Nicolas Thienpont produced his first vintage in 1983. The Thienpont family, who also own Vieux Château Certan in Pomerol and are the custodians of Le Pin, are widely credited with establishing the reputation of the entire Francs appellation. The 2010 non-George cuvée is predominantly Merlot with approximately 25% Cabernet Franc and a small addition of Malbec.

Provenance

The late David Brice was a respected wine connoisseur, collector and co-founder of Brice and Burnett – The Fine Wine Specialists (formerly Wine Cellar). His lifelong passion for wine from all corners of the world wine, and generosity, helped develop a culture of fine wine in South Africa and beyond. Always with value and authenticity in mind, the collection spans a wide range of styles from leading producers and diverse regions. The wines were professionally imported under refrigeration and carefully stored at Brice and Burnett (formerly Wine Cellar) thereafter. Many of the producers are not available in South Africa and provide an excellent buying opportunity.

David studied and tasted Bordeaux more than any other region and he purchased en-primeur, or pre-release, for more than 3 decades. He bought the great vintages, loved magnums, and enjoyed the sweet wines of Sauternes. The cellar contains the famous names, but also highly regarded but lesser-known Chateaux and appellations.

For more detailed information on the lots, please feel free to contact Roland Peens (roland@winecellar.co.za). Roland spent many years sharing and enjoying these wines with David Brice and is happy to provide further insight into the collection.

Critics Ratings

“Polished and lively. Well done. Dry finish but appetising. Easy, well balanced but not very ambitious. Nice, medium-everything wine.” - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16/20 (Apr 2011)

“Surprisingly elegant, lush and fruit-forward, as one might expect from this unheralded appellation. Deep ruby/purple with plenty of fruit. The team of Nicolas Thienpont and Stéphane Derenoncourt have done a superb job with this inexpensive wine.” - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (Feb 2013)
